FRIDAY 20TH

BLAWAN & SUNIL SHARPE AT THE TWISTED PEPPER

BLAWAN :

Seemingly rising from nowhere, South Yorkshire-born producer and DJ Jamie Roberts aka, Blawan, first came to prominence with his debut release Fram on the forward-thinking dubstep label Hessle Audio.

Standing apart from the crowd with his clanking, stepping percussive beats, Blawan inked a deal with legendary techno label R&S Records, and released his first EP for the label in 2011. Bohla’s mix of post-dubstep sounds and raw, techno-influenced beats saw the EP championed by DJs such as Surgeon and The Black Dog.

What You Do with What You Have followed a few months later on R&S, and a remix of the Radiohead track

SUNIL SHARPE:

Coming through the traditional DJ route of pirate radio, outdoor raves and working on the front line of a record shop, Sunil Sharpe is one of Ireland’s most celebrated underground DJs. Honing his turntable skills in the late ‘90s, Sunil played his first club gigs at the end of 2000 – gaining a formidable reputation for his quick fire mixing and fast paced sets that were soon to be heard regularly at clubs across the country. Before long he was invited to play at Berlin’s legendary Tresor Club in 2001 – the first of many European based events he has played at since.

Sunil’s production output has moved steadily, mostly since 2006. He has recorded for labels such as Tonewrecker, Bastardo Electrico, Open Source and his own Mantrap Recordings – a label (of “full-blooded techno, electro and experimental flavours”) he established in December 2007, which despite an irregular release schedule, has become a favourite with some of the scene’s leading djs and tastemakers.

BLOND:ISH AT OPIUM ROOMS

BLONDISH AT OPIUM ROOMS

Whether they’re dressed as kung-foo fighters or armed with bubble-blowing toy guns, the BLOND:ISH DJ duo is always entertaining. This double act recipe is made up of Djs Vivie-Ann and Anstascia who not only play wicked music but also know how to throw a memorable party. BLOND:ISH creates an unforgettable experience as they corrupt the dance floor with their mix of electronic vocal house with underlying tech elements. Their style is versatile as they can command crowds internationally from “models and bottles” clubs to more modest underground venues.

As members of the notorious Kompakt and Get Physical families along with a slew of other labels, Anstascia and Vivie-Ann have carved out a niche thanks to their dark, sensual club music, sultry DJ sets and outrageous, fun-loving attitude. There is something empowering about the way Blond:Ish handles their take on life and music. It’s a debaucherous lets get dirty and let loose attitude. So grab your bleach, or your wig, and get ready to go blonde, Blond:ish that is.

JOHN TALABOT HIVERN DISCS SHOWCASE AT DISTRICT 8

JOHN TALABOT HIVERN DISCS SHOWCASE AT DISTRICT 8

On Support:

  • Marc Piñol
  • Dani Baughman

If there is one person, who has been causing a stir on the international club circuit recently, it is Barcelona’s John Talabot. Already his debut “My Old School“ (which is meant literally by the way) on Permanent Vacation in 2009 and shortly after that the single “ Sunshine”, which he put out on his own Hivern Disc imprint, made him one of the most promising musicians of the Spanish electronic scene. And those two releases also already set the mark for John Talabot’s unparalleled music: raw, loopy, heavy on the kick drum, sample based, moderate on the tempo, distorted on the drums and light years away from the clean and ever revolving house sound of today. This unique style which also blends influences from afro beat, Detroit techno, Chicago house and cosmic disco, but also northern soul or the energy of Flamenco, immediately turned some heads around.
