Are You Eligible to Vote for Repealing the 8th Amendment Referendum?

April 17, 2018 – News

With the referendum vote for repealing the 8th Amendment set to take place on this 25th of May, it’s time that you make sure you are eligible and ready to cast your vote with confidence! With less than 50% of eligible young voters aged 18-29 casting a vote in 2012, we need to ensure we all cast our vote and get the voices of the Millennial generation heard!

We have compiled a list of Q&A to help educate your beautiful self for the big day:

Am I eligible to vote?

If you are over 18 years of age from 15 February 2018 and an Irish citizen, you are entitled to vote.

I live abroad, can I still vote?

Sadly, you cannot be added to the Register of Electors if you live abroad, leaving you without a vote within this referendum.

Did I hear something about postal voting?

Yes, you did! You may be eligible for a postal vote if you are:

  • An Irish diplomat or his/her spouse posted abroad
  • A member of the Garda Síochána
  • A whole-time member of the Defence Forces.

Furthermore, one may be granted a postal vote if they cannot attend the polling station due to:

  • A physical illness or disability
  • Studying full time at an educational institution in Ireland, which is away from your home address where you are registered
  • You being unable to vote at your polling station because of your occupation
  • You being unable to vote at your polling station because you are in prison as a result of an order of a court.

How do I check if I am registered to vote in this referendum?

You can check if you are registered online here.

I’m not on the list, HELP?!?!

OK, CHILL. If you are not on the list, contact your local authority and see if you are on their register. You can find their contact details here.

If your circumstances have changed since the last Live Register, you can be added to a supplementary register. This register will be open to everyone until 14 days before the polling day.

If you are not registered, you must fill out this form

If you want to apply for a change of address you must fill out this form

If you have become an Irish Citizen and are already registered, you must fill out this form

The seriousness of this referendum cannot be understated, and either can your vote, your voice. Remember:

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’
